QUICK QUESTION: Which Great TV Shows Probably Should've Ended Sooner?

Thu, 26 Jan 2012 11:00:00 EST

The problem with excellent TV series is that we tend to wish they would stay on the air forever. Unfortunately, we often have to be careful what we wish for. Frequently we're forced to deal with a once-terrific show becoming less-than-stellar after its writers and producers run out of good ideas, and in retrospect maybe a solid and memorable ending would've been better than a long, sad, petering out. That's no way for a great series to end! Almost any classic show (but particularly serials) deals with this dilemma, and only a lucky few ever get to self-cancel in order to go out on a creative high.
To be clear, these are GREAT shows and we're lucky to have had them at all, but still... in retrospect, they probably should've ended sooner....  More >>

The Bachelor: Hey, Jealousy

Tue, 24 Jan 2012 15:00:00 EST

Last night, as Ben surveyed Park City, Utah from a helicopter in the opening moments of The Bachelor, probably trying to figure out if there was a way to claim it as also being his hometown, I realized his shaggy nineties bowl-cut bears a startling resemblance to that one Geico caveman.

Imagining Ben as a caveman who's been de-iced, debriefed on modern life, and is quietly terrified by the helicopters, tea lights, and sparkly lip gloss that surround him made me like him for the first time. Will the woman he chooses accept the...  More >>

Alcatraz: Kid Killers Get No Respect

Tue, 24 Jan 2012 13:50:00 EST

Welcome back... to Alcatraz. By the way, anytime you say "Alcatraz," it should sound like this. Episode 3 of the new Fox procedural, "Kit Nelson," confirmed my darkest fear: that every single episode will be named for its reappearing prisoner/guard of the week! With 302 of those rascals on the loose, that's a lot of names and not much in the way of description. What happened to titles like More >>

CASTING NEWS
... Summer Glau *click, click, click* HEY! I wasn't even done yet! Summer Glau, who many websites will refer to as a "fanboy's dream girl" or something like that but I'll just refer to her as an angel who fell to Earth, has set up her next major role. I think. Preview: NBC's Smash, Which Is Now Streaming Online

Mon, 23 Jan 2012 18:30:00 EST

It’s been said before, but it bears repeating: Smash is not Glee.
Maybe we shouldn’t have to say it, but when you’re a big musical TV series premiering in a post-Glee world, you kind of have to draw the distinction. At the Television Critics Association press tour earlier this month, the cast and crew of the buzzed-about NBC series were happy to spell it out.

American Idol: Planes, Ships, and Auditionmobiles

Mon, 23 Jan 2012 18:05:00 EST

Though the NFL finals would delay Sunday's proceedings by close to an hour, American Idol managed somehow to cram yet another audition show into its first week back on the air. This one was set on an aircraft carrier docked in San Diego harbor, for reasons unknown. Acoustics? No. A surprise aerial attack from the judging panel of The Voice? Possibly. Here now, as is our custom, are the good, bad and downright ugly from the third stop on Idol’s eleventh auditions tour. Except instead of “the ugly,” we have instead “the huh?” As in, Jim Carrey’s daughter? Huh?

Fringe: The League of Extraordinary Universes

Mon, 23 Jan 2012 15:30:00 EST

Fringe got to show off its coolest device yet in Friday's "The Enemy of My Enemy," a fun episode that established a major new arc for the season's new universes in a new timeline. Back in September, Season 4 began with the promise of the two universes working together, but unfounded suspicions—like assuming Walternate is sending super-shapeshifters over to "our" side to kill everyone—have prevented the two worlds from fully cooperating with each other throughout most of the first half of the season.
But thanks to the reintroduction of one Mr. David...  More >>

Poor Mrs. Crawley. Let us hope this plot somehow resolves itself this week, as I’m really not sure how much more of Ballistic: Cora vs. Isobel I can take.

Edith, however, has in one week grown into a one-woman, soldier-convalescing powerhouse. She prepared a musical performance for the...  More >>

19 Highlights (and Lowlights) from Lifetime's Drew Peterson: Untouchable... with .GIFs!

Mon, 23 Jan 2012 13:30:00 EST

I'm no Nancy Grace, but my opinion is that murder is wrong. Sorry to be so controversial, but it's true: I don't think people should be murdering. And as long as we're talking about things that are wrong, I think that spousal abuse, deceit, jealousy, infidelity, and casual misogyny are also wrong. Not as wrong as murder, sure, but still plenty wrong on their own. And they're all very serious subjects, too. That's why it's strange that Lifetime Television for Women would take the real life, real awful story of Drew Peterson and turn it into one of the weirdest, most unintentionally hilarious movies I've seen in a while. Shameless: Welcome to Heartbreak

Mon, 23 Jan 2012 2:00:00 EST

One of Shameless's best traits is its ability to balance extremely dark plot lines with lighter ones by juggling so many at once. This week's storyline may have been the series' most depressing one to date: Frank's romance of Dottie Coronas was an extension of his usual goal of earning for himself at the expense others, but preventing Dottie from getting her heart transplant was, without a doubt, the worst thing Frank has done. His selfish behavior usually affects only his family, causing them to scrape, sacrifice, and end up coming together for the better. The...  More >>

Sometime over the holidays my dad and I were discussing our shared fondness for Natasha Henstridge—my family saw Species and Species II (!) in theaters—so I brought to his attention that she currently had a new gig on the CW called The Secret Circle and his eyes lit up. He hadn't heard of TSC (or, let's be honest, the CW) and asked whether he'd like it or not, and I frankly didn't know what to say. This is a problem I've run into with other people who ask whether this very CW show about teenage witches is worth their...  More >>

But I do know what the food tastes like, and that long lines of hungry extras were hidden from camera. I can tell you that a bored production assistant picked a zit on her chin, using her iPhone as a mirror, while the chefs were hard at work. The Vampire Diaries: Mother Bother (PHOTO RECAP)

I don't know if you guys remember last week, but if you're ever in the mood, just kick up your feet and really cast your memory back to last Thursday-ish. That was when a truly great episode of The Vampire Diaries aired. In a third season that has been basically ON FIRE, that episode in particular has to be a high point.
I'm not sure if anybody looked at this week's episode synopsis, noted that it was Bonnie-centric, and was like, "Yep, that's gonna be a classic." Because this week's episode, "The Ties That Bind," was was not a classic. It was about medium-okay. But saying a Season 3 episode is only medium-okay is like saying, "We only hit...  More >>

30 Rock Tackles the Culture of Outrage

30 Rock is always up for mystery, and last night’s episode, “Idiots Are People Two!”—a two-parter concluding next week—kicked off with a good one. It began with Kelsey Grammer (sure, why not?) barging into Liz’s office to alert her to a crime scene of sorts: Pete was unconscious in a custodial closet, his pants around his ankles, a bra catalog on his chest, and a plastic bag on his head. To the casual observer, it was a cut-and-dried case of auto-erotic asphyxiation gone awry. (Or was it?)...  More >>

American Idol: The Pittsburghing

Last night, Round 2 of American Idol’s search for a palatable superstar brought the team to the cradle of America’s steel industry, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Which is fortuitous, seeing as how our aspiring recording artists are going to need balls of iron to endure the rigorous audition process that lies ahead. And Pittsburgh is where they start paying—in sweat, mopped off with a Terrible Towel. Now that I’ve exhausted my knowledge of Pittsburgh in a series of groaners, let’s check out the good, bad and ugly of last night’s auditioners.

Volkswagen is Doing the Star Wars Thing for the Super Bowl Again (VIDEO)

Fri, 20 Jan 2012 11:30:00 EST

Remember this? Of course you do, because the internet loves a good Star Wars homage.
Volkswagen knows this; as such, the company is once again going the Star Wars route for the Super Bowl—the game is on February 5—and has released the following "Game Day Commercial Teaser." I'm ignoring the nagging thought in my head that's disgustedly exclaiming, "A preview for a commercial?" because instead of an adorable mini Darth Vader, this year's video involves some adorable dogs.
Happy Friday!
