Ghost Whisperer: Dead on Arrival

Mon, 8 Feb 2010 16:47:00 CST

Shows like The Ghost Whisperer always seem to involve some restless spirit with “unfinished business” among the living. It’s like the Dead are finally getting around to their “to-do” lists and they need somebody like Jennifer Love Hewitt to play their personal assistant. Maybe that’s why Hewitt’s show never made it onto my “to-do” list. I prefer my ghost stories with more shrieking and wailing and less emotional closure. But I sat down on Friday to peer into the world beyond the grave, a world where the scariest thing is the dialogue.

Doing the Twist with the Creators of Damages

Mon, 8 Feb 2010 15:13:00 CST

Damages is one of those shows that I push hard on people, because I find it so unique and challenging. And also because I am a bit of a masochist. See, Damages doesn't operate like other television shows on air right now. It prefers to dangle things in front of viewers, show them bits of the "ending" right off the bat, and generally lead them in a direction where they think they know the answer to the mystery before blowing everything up. I chatted with show creators (and brothers) Todd and Glenn Kessler about about the general sense of the FX program and Season 3.

Big Love: Oh Jesus

As good as last night’s Big Love turned out to be, my personal highlight might have been getting to hear Norman Greenbaum’s “Spirit In the Sky” played over the final credits.
Somehow a song that fuses gospel and psychedelia by a Jewish one-hit wonder proved to be a perfect coda for a show focused on a fundamentalist Mormon polygamist running for political office. >Rolling Stone ranked “Spirit” exactly 333 on its list of the 500 greatest songs of all time. Temple Grandin is Quite Possibly the Most Unlikely TV Movie Ever Made

It's got blockbuster written all over it, right? But bless HBO and its often contrarian heart, because this weekend that woman’s story premieres in Temple Grandin starring More >>

The change was inevitable, though it's neutered my Office mainstays; after watching last month's clip-scravaganza "The Banker," I can't deny they're not as fun as they used to be. Sarah Silverman seems like the type of girl you'd like to take home to meet your grandma. That is, until she opens her mouth. The comedian has built a reputation as a bit of a potty-mouth, but not by wading through the sewage of profanity. No, she takes risque topics (of both the controversial and sophomoric varieties) head on and hits them hard, contrary to what her adorable exterior may suggest.
Her brand of comedy has gotten her a show on Comedy Central, The Sarah Silverman Program, which just so happens to be one of the funniest things on television today....  More >>

Tonight on 30 Rock, SNL's Jan Hooks will be taking over the guest star role and relieving the lovely Julianne Moore—a talented woman whose work I almost always enjoy but whose appearance on 30 Rock left me cold. Basically, she fell short of some of the truly outstanding women who've loved Alec Baldwin’s Jack Donaghy. So let's rank them, shall we? Here are Jack's past loves, in order of ascending awesomeness:

Help Me, I'm So Lost!

Wed, 3 Feb 2010 12:19:00 CST

Back when Lost first started, I tried to watch the very first episode. I really did. Big wow opening. And who doesn’t love a big special effects plane crash? But then the only thing stronger than the smell of burned jet fuel at that crash site was the smell of a fog machine working overtime to make everything look all spooky. The way I saw it, Shaggy was going to be parallel parking the Mystery Van outside the Tiki House any minute.
And I tuned out. Just like that.
But now with Lost tugging its final season of mystical mayhem across the small screen, I figured it was as good a time as any to check back in and see if the 10 minutes or so I...  More >>

The Biggest Loser Brings On the Big Fat Tears

Wed, 3 Feb 2010 11:57:00 CST

Was it me, or were you crying like a prom queen during last night’s episode of Biggest Loser, too? Between the awesomeness that is the Yellow Team—78 pounds in a month, without the benefit of Jillian and Bob—and the breakdowns, boom, boom, boom like dominoes from Melissa, Daris, and Ashley, it was a real hanky-soaker.
But let’s back up a minute, because the show opened with a midnight 911 call that resulted in Miggy being whisked off to the ER. The bitter old troll inside me wondered if she was faking something so she could follow her recently sent-home daughter back to the land of hard-assed Puerto Rican ladies. The more mentally balanced...  More >>

Melbourne keeps the Logie Awards

Brisbane puts up a good fight, but TV's "night of nights" is staying put.
Melbourne has won the right to host the Logie Awards once again.
The southern city has fended off a strong bid from the Queensland government to lure TV's night of nights to the north.
The show is about to be confirmed as remaining at Crown Casino on May 2 -- its home for the last decade.
Queensland had been eyeing the event for more than 12 months, acknowledging the prestige of hosting the country's biggest awards night. Say what you will about the credibility of the awards, the AFIs...  More >>

Damages: (De)Constructing a Mystery

Tue, 2 Feb 2010 15:41:00 CST

I've got to hand it to the creators of Damages. They really know how to televise crack. Seriously, the FX thriller is ridiculously addictive, hooking you from the opening image and never letting go.
We're two episodes into Season 3, and so far everything points to this chapter being of equal quality to Season 1, which established the series as one of television's best. But of Damages' many sparkling qualities, what we're seeing in Season 3is a clinic on how to present a mystery for maximum viewing pleasure. Provided your idea of pleasure is letting out audible gasps and picking your jaw up off the floor.
But how do they do it? Let's take a...  More >>

Forget Top Model—RuPaul's Drag Race is Way More Fierce

If you've ever tuned into RuPaul’s Drag Race (which airs Mondays at 10pm on LOGO), you might have noticed it bears a few similarities to another reality TV show hosted by another glamorous supermodel.
