The problem with excellent TV series is that we tend to wish they would stay on the air forever. Unfortunately, we often have to be careful what we wish for. Frequently we're forced to deal with a once-terrific show becoming less-than-stellar after its writers and producers run out of good ideas, and in retrospect maybe a solid and memorable ending would've been better than a long, sad, petering out. That's no way for a great series to end! Almost any classic show (but particularly serials) deals with this dilemma, and only a lucky few ever get to self-cancel in order to go out on a creative high.
To be clear, these are GREAT shows and we're lucky to have had them at all, but still... in retrospect, they probably should've ended sooner.... More >>

And as long as we're talking about things that are wrong, I think that spousal abuse, deceit, jealousy, infidelity, and casual misogyny are also wrong. Not as wrong as murder, sure, but still plenty wrong on their own. And they're all very serious subjects, too. That's why it's strange that Lifetime Television for Women would take the real life, real awful story of Drew Peterson and turn it into one of the weirdest, most unintentionally hilarious movies I've seen in a while.

Sometime over the holidays my dad and I were discussing our shared fondness for Natasha Henstridgemy family saw Species and Species II (!) in theatersso I brought to his attention that she currently had a new gig on the CW called The Secret Circle and his eyes lit up. He hadn't heard of TSC (or, let's be honest, the CW) and asked whether he'd like it or not, and I frankly didn't know what to say. This is a problem I've run into with other people who ask whether this very CW show about teenage witches is worth their... More >>

Is it just us, or was this week the best week of TV ever? Oh, it was just us? Well, you have to admit it was at least pretty good. Top 100 for sure. Here's what we thought was good and bad on the tube this week.

Sunday is the fourth episode of Rachael vs. Guy: Celebrity Cook-off. I haven't seen any footage from it. I don't know which team wins, though I can make a rather educated guess. But I do know what the food tastes like, and that long lines of hungry extras were hidden from camera. I can tell you that a bored production assistant picked a zit on her chin, using her iPhone as a mirror, while the chefs were hard at work. I can tell you that every time you see a close-up of the celebrity chefs in action, there was a cameraman pushing people out of the way to... More >>

MUSTN'T-SEE TV NEWS
... Remember when Thursday nights were owned by NBC? Friends! Seinfeld! ER! Now it's got... The Firm. The 10pm showing of the new drama drew a pathetic 0.9 rating in the adult demo on Thursday, placing it EIGHTH for the evening. I know what you're saying: "But Tim, there are only like five major networks!" Exactly. MTV won the time period with Jersey Shore's 3.5, followed by CBS's

Last night's episode of Person of Interest, "Legacy," continued the series' great season-long pacing. We saw Detective Carter come into the fold with Reese and Finch, Finch do some extracurricular work that raised Reese's eyebrows, and most importantly, Reese clean up some of New York City's scummiest dirtbags.
"Legacy" was one of Reese's best episodes in a long time, particularly in the early scenes. The man was on fire, uttering zingers and punching... More >>

I don't know if you guys remember last week, but if you're ever in the mood, just kick up your feet and really cast your memory back to last Thursday-ish. That was when a truly great episode of The Vampire Diaries aired. In a third season that has been basically ON FIRE, that episode in particular has to be a high point.
I'm not sure if anybody looked at this week's episode synopsis, noted that it was Bonnie-centric, and was like, "Yep, that's gonna be a classic." Because this week's episode, "The Ties That Bind," was was not a classic. It was about medium-okay. But saying a Season 3 episode is only medium-okay is like saying, "We only hit... More >>

30 Rock is always up for mystery, and last nights episode, Idiots Are People Two!a two-parter concluding next weekkicked off with a good one. It began with Kelsey Grammer (sure, why not?) barging into Lizs office to alert her to a crime scene of sorts: Pete was unconscious in a custodial closet, his pants around his ankles, a bra catalog on his chest, and a plastic bag on his head. To the casual observer, it was a cut-and-dried case of auto-erotic asphyxiation gone awry. (Or was it?)... More >>

If you tuned into FX at 10pm last night looking for a solid hour of animated comedy, you probably left half satisfied. The third season of Archer, which is arguably TV's funniest show, premiered and didn't miss a step. It was half-an-hour of rapid-fire zingers, cartoon danger, and Burt Reynolds. That was followed by the premiere of Unsupervised, arguably TV's worst new show. It was half-an-hour of zero jokes, annoying characters, and... More >>

Last night, Round 2 of American Idols search for a palatable superstar brought the team to the cradle of Americas steel industry, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Which is fortuitous, seeing as how our aspiring recording artists are going to need balls of iron to endure the rigorous audition process that lies ahead. And Pittsburgh is where they start payingin sweat, mopped off with a Terrible Towel. Now that Ive exhausted my knowledge of Pittsburgh in a series of groaners, lets check out the good, bad and ugly of last nights auditioners.

Remember this? Of course you do, because the internet loves a good Star Wars homage.
Volkswagen knows this; as such, the company is once again going the Star Wars route for the Super Bowlthe game is on February 5and has released the following "Game Day Commercial Teaser." I'm ignoring the nagging thought in my head that's disgustedly exclaiming, "A preview for a commercial?" because instead of an adorable mini Darth Vader, this year's video involves some adorable dogs.
Happy Friday!

Thursday's episode of Parks and Recreation, "Campaign Ad," saw our beloved Leslie Knope facing off against a new opponent in the race for City Council: the dashing but dumb Sweetums heir Bobby Newport (guest-star Paul Rudd). As the episode title reveals, campaign ads were in orderbut conflict arose when Ben's plan to shoot an attack ad ran aground of Leslie's "don't be negative" ideals.
They couple compromised in the end, but not before Leslie'd had a chance to shoot an ad that, true to her "positive is always better than negative" mantra,... More >>

The ABC drama "Pan Am" looks great on-screen because every detail is so sharp in person. From the 707 jet replica in a studio warehouse at the Brooklyn Navy Yard to the constricting undergarments the stewardesses wear, everything is authentic.
